A little history at the start
At the beginning of 2019, we began to think intensively about the future of Locus Map, and thus the future direction of our company. Our priorities were and are clear from the beginning – we want to continue to develop and improve Locus Map for you, on all platforms – Android, iOS and web. However, such development would no longer be possible without a fundamental change in the concept of our project.
The Locus Map Pro app, now Classic, was already technically very complex at the time and it was necessary to take into account the increasing costs of maintaining its functionality in the rapidly changing environment of the Android operating system and connected services.
That’s why, in the spring of that year, we first informed you about the launch of the next generation of Locus Map and our next steps:
- Our priority is the development of a single application, Locus Map 4, contingent on sustainable funding through subscriptions and other recurring payment options
- The emergence of our own web services to manage your data – web portal, cloud, and synchronisation and the associated reduction in dependency on third-party services and applications
- The decline in the development of Locus Map Pro, the renaming of the application to Locus Map 3 Classic, and the transition to maintenance mode with the end of support within a few years
Two years later, we launched the Locus Map 4 project, including the promised functionality and web services, which we have been developing, improving and expanding ever since. We have also introduced Premium Silver and Gold advanced feature packages, available by subscription and for one-time term payments.
For Locus Map 3 Classic users, we’ve offered 100% off Premium Silver and 50% off Premium Gold for one year. This exclusive offer, among other things, offsets the investment on the previous purchase of the Classic version. So it doesn’t matter if it was purchased a week ago or 10 years ago.
- Locus Map 4 has undergone several phases of redesign for better ergonomics and user-friendliness
- It is fully usable offline without relying on third-party applications and add-ons
- It is connected to a web portal with its own hiking/biking and satellite maps, route planner and library of user tracks, routes and points

Locus Map 3 Classic enters its final phase
As time goes on, the development of the two variants of Locus Map has become increasingly divergent and it has become very costly for us to maintain both product branches.
So the time has come to announce that we will end support and maintenance of Locus Map 3 Classic in the spring of 2026.
The app will be pulled from Google Play and will continue to be available only as an APK file in our public archive.

What is the best way to switch to Locus Map 4?
Locus Map 3 Classic
- Make a backup using the Backup tool, save it either to the system folder “downloads” or to one of the supported clouds (Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive)
- In Settings > Miscellaneous > Default directories, select “Unload app data“
- Create a directory “locus_data” in the system folder “Downloads” and store the application data in it
Locus Map 4
- Install the app from Google Play
- In settings > Backup & file system > App data transfer, select “Load app data“
- Retrieve the data from the “locus_data” folder in the “downloads” directory
- After restarting the application, restore the backup from the “downloads” folder or the cloud
- After another restart, the app is ready
- To get the discount of 100% on Premium Silver and 50% on Premium Gold, log in with the same Locus account you used in Locus Map Classic

I always use this app. It is so good to measure land and get location points.
Locus Map 4 can measure land and get location points, too, plus much more. There's no need to stay with the obsolete app without maintenance and support.
Cmon, Locus Classic is still very good :) I've been using it for years, imho it has a better interface than Locus 4. I don't like the new look of Locus to be honest. That was the biggest stop to me from migrating.

Hi Rafi, the app will not be "switched off". It will only stop being updated, maintained and suppported. And it will be disconnected from Locus Store and third-party online services like weather forecast ot GRapHopper.
What about already purchased maps? It doesn't make sense for me to switch to a newer app when I already bought maps that I need. Any ways to stay on the older version and preserve already purchased maps indefinitely (custom apk is fine for me)?
Your bought maps are fully functional in Locus Map 4.

Bonjour, je tente une question ici car je n'arrive pas à trouver une solution à un problème que je rencontre en utilisant la version locus map gratuite que j'ai télécharger sur mon téléphone portable tout récemment.
En effet, je souhaiterais utiliser cette application avec une classe sur le terrain et je l'ai essayé, j'ai réussi à tracer un parcours en y incluant des photos "sans problèmes" en revanche je ne sais pas comment faire pour partager ce parcours avec les photos à une autre personne. J'ai essayé mais l'autre personne reçoit le parcours sans avoir accès aux photos. Faut-il pour cela utiliser la version payante ou est-ce possible autrement ?

Dobrý den,dnes jsem si nainstaloval Locus,zatím bez map..Chci si vyzloušet celý software ,zda komunikuje s aplikací Locus map,přes externí GPS bluetooth,který mne umožní velikou přesnost,kterou má můj GPS přijimač (1 m).. Spárovaný s bluetooth je.. Pouze alikace Locus mne říká,abych nastavil povolení ve skypilotu.. To je právě ten problém,kde to v systému Locus map je a kde to najdu. Prosím o radu.. Díky moc. Chci si tuto bezkonkurenční navigaci určitě koupit,protože mám na kole 2,5 KW baterii 48V/50A a jezdím denně v pohodě kolem 200km na svém novém kole Kellys prošpikovaném elektronikou s dobíjením za jízdy..Díky moc za radu,jak tuto kompatibilitu v Locusu provést.. Does V4 support adding layers (points, tracks, polygons) with several fields so that these fields can be updated with surveyed data (e.g. text, numbers, etc.)?

Of course it does. It offers the same features plus much more.
Not too happy at the news. I have years of use on this old 'obsolete' app (which is not in fact, for me, at all).
I don't think people still on V3 classic need new developments. They just need an occasional update if the new Android version breaks it. Not sure if it's that time or resources consuming.
Now nothing interests me in the new app. I will be forced to subscribe to an expensive (for the use I have) platinum for the functions I use twice or three times a year, plus I don't like the new interface. I will be forced to subscribe just to have a look at my tracks and the POI I have painstakingly created over the years.
Real incentives would be the ability to see any map in 3D which helps in the mountains but I don't see that coming. I used to buy Locus Maps packs in the Locus Store too but I'll think I'll stop using all that altogether.

- yes, maintaining the app in this state is very time consuming now when the app uses a different user database

- you don't have to subscribe at all if you just need to use the basic features like track recording , route planning or navigation or management of your tracks. If you need the features that are in Locus Map Classic, subscribe to Premium Silver which only costs 10€ a year

- generating 3D maps is very resource-consuming and it drains the battery which is quite counter-productive for an outdoor navigation app

We don't sell a lifetime license; Google Play does. We are only developers, Google Play is the vendor. The lifetime is not a person's lifetime - it's the app's lifetime. And Locus Map Classic's lifetime has been fulfilled.
You have promised 2019:

We will update and maintain it so that it can deal with the pitfalls of other versions of Android. what promise? We didn't promise that LM Classic will stay on Google Play forever. We maintained it, supported it, and updated it for 6 years after we started the transition to a more sustainable model. That's quite a long time in IT. Apps come and go, and now it's time for Locus Map Classic.
customers come and go too ... I know, you want to earn money, but I don't want to give my money every month/year ... I prefer one time payment for basic use (Locus is the best, but not the only) ... please, rethink your decisions ... special features and periodic payment$ doesn't interest me ... sorry guy$, but greed is no good
Hi, "basic use" is free to use in Locus Map 4. Getting paid for continuous development, maintenance, support, web services, etc. is not greed. It's vital for keeping the company running. Another option is to sell the business to someone who drains it to the bone and throws it away (which happened in Viewranger and is expected in Komoot). But we chose the more difficult way.
hi ... I understand that developers need money for their work ... but every month payment for using 1 app is nonsense ... I just don't want to mess with any app over and over again ... and Viewranger/Outdooractive problem is no problem ... I can use my purchased maps in new app, no problem ... you should rethink the situation and maybe offer basic app with basic functionalities for reasonable price ... for more, customers can pay if they want
The basic functionalities are available for free. And you don't have to pay monthly - you can pay once a year.
Using LM3 for many years now... Is "free basic use" of LM4 same as my LIFETIME LM3 ?
If not, why should i move to LM4
Hi Udi, by moving to LM4 in its "free basic" version you get an updated, maintained and supported app with all the essentials you need - track recording, route planning, navigation, etc. If you need more features, support us by purchasing a one-off period if you don't like subscriptions. The life time of LM3C is coming to an end which means it won't be updated, maintained and supported after spring 2026.
i do not worry . i have lifetime licence . so until i live i will install it on my new dones even in 2070.
since you accept payment for it you must keep it working. i do not expect anything new though .
this is not you say 'we finish support with this 2026 season', but commitment you made with buy sell law agreement and lifetime is not season.
optionally you can replace it with lifetime licence of locus 3 prociding only app name changes in aggrement. othwerwise i will sue you

2) if you use the same Google account both on your phone and tablet, then yes, you can use LM Pro on both devices
3) yes, if you use the same Google account on both devics and the same account in your Locus Store user profile, you can use the same map in both devices

LoCoins stay on your Locus account which can be used on both apps - LM Classic and LM 4. LoCOins are independent on the subscription.

I fully understand you need to make a living off the app. On the other hand I bought a lifetime license. Obviously this is not going hand in hand.
I need no extra features. Locus 3 as is is fine.

when Google Play says "lifetime," it doesn't mean a human lifetime - it means the app's lifetime. You paid once for the app's lifetime. Now, Locus Map Classic's lifetime is coming to an end.
It is not possible to provide an app without maintaining it. Plus, the app is connected to an environment that needs financing. We've been keeping Locus Map Classic on for 6 years since we announced the transition to a more sustainable model. We understand it is frustrating for many that this period has come to an end but there's no other way for us if we want to continue the development.
Voicing discontentment at the planned removal of Locus 3 is like complaining to an AI chatbot.
They'll keep saying 'just subscribe to a silver or gold package' or use the free version.
But for someone who only hikes 🚶 once in a while or does random trips along the year, it absolutely doesn't feel right or suits me and a few others from what I've read.

- that's right with one exception - we don't use chatbots for communication with our users. We prefer personal approach.

- you don't hav to pay for a year long. You can use the free version and when you need extra features for a while, pay a few bucks for one month and then cancel the subscription. Your data will stay in your app.

Yeah, I've also was under an impression that the license is lifetime. I don't need any new features, just keep the app alive when new versions of android come out, it should not be too difficult. I paid around 24$ for the classic, and it's quite a lot comparing to other paid apps that cost around 1.5$. And to be clear, I own a lot of paid apps, and they do offer free upgrades for new android versions. This is just unfair - you charge more money for the app, plus you charge for the maps. And now you want to abondone the classic just to get more money on subscriptions.
Hi Pavel, you purchased Locus Map Classic in 2022 for 48,99 TRY which was around 3 USD at that time (according to https://www.exchange-rates.org/exchange-rate-history/try-usd-2022). Then you spent around 48 TRY for maps. That is around 6 USD in total in 3 years. 3 years of development, maintenance, support and third-party services. Is this really unfair?
Locus Map 4 doesn't include any functionality I don't already have with Classic. I didn't migrate on first release as I don't remember a free option at that time. I'm pleased to see that option now exists and that it gives me everything that I need. I also understand that a lifetime licence refers to the lifetime of the product, not the lifetime of the user. Your credit on the new licence and advance warning are both above and beyond what many developers offer.
Does the migration process keep all of the Lomaps I have bought over the years and my remaining credits too? I have read information in the past which has lead me to understand that I will need to buy them all again

Locus Map 4, in its basic version, was free from the beginning in 2019 - it is a successor of Locus Map Free that existed before.
If you use the same Locus account in Locus Map 4 as in Locus Map Classic, all your LoCoin purchases and downloaded maps remain with you.
I'll investigate further. Locus Map Free didn't give me everything that I want, which is why I bought Pro, I'll investigate the free version of Locus Map 4. Good that I can transfer map purchases from one to the other

Hi Arne, Locus Map Classic will be disconnected from Locus Store so it won't be possible to download maps from there. Also, third-party services will stop working for it - weather forecast, GraphHopper router...

2) keby som využil Silver na rok za výmenu z Classic, je možné na skúšku napríklad na mesiac skúsiť gold a po mesiaci sa mi automaticky vráti Silver?

1) v Classicu není žádná funkce, která je nyní v Premium Gold. Všechny funkce z Classic verze jsou dostupné v Premium Silver.
2) ano, toto je možné, pokud si na zkoušku koupíte jednorázový Gold na měsíc. Po jeho vyčerpání automaticky pokračujete v Silveru zdarma.
A ešte otázka: keď si dám Silver na mesiac na skúšku, stále mi ostane možnosť na rok zadarmo vymeniť Classic za Silver?
Silver máte k dispozici zdarma na celý rok, tak nedává smysl využít jej pouze na měsíc.
Myslel som to tak, že si ponechám zatiaľ Classic a na verziu 4 si aktivujem Silver na mesiac. Ak sa mi to zaľúbi, či by sa dala potom využiť tá akcia Silver na rok zadarmo. Predpokladám že po využití tej akcie prídem o aplikáciu Classic úplne.
Silver zdarma je k dispozici pouze na rok a momentálně je jedno, kdy jej využijete. Aplikace LM Classic a LM4 jsou nezávislé a můžete v telefonu používat obě. Každá ale se svou vlastní databází tras a bodů - od verze 4.28 jsou jejich databáze nekompatibilní. Po ukončení Silveru zdarma se můžete vrátit ke Classicu, ale ten už zřejmě nebude na Google Play, ale pouze v našem veřejném archivu na https://bit.ly/lmVersions.

Pokud mám nainstalovaný Locus Classic a kopím si Locus 4 Silver (tedy defacto jinou aplikaci), bude nutné do ní přenést všechny offline mapy (NE LoMaps), které mám v Locus Classic a nebo mi to nabídne automatický přenos při prvním spuštění Locus 4? Stejný dotaz mám i co se týká zazanamenaných nebo naplánavaných tras a bodů. A jak je to s nastavením aplikace - přenese se nějakým způsobem automaticky (případně načtením zálohy z Locus Classic) nebo bude nutné vše nastavovat znovu manuálně? Dále by mne zajímalo jak to bude s vlastními obrazovkami (dashboard) - je možné je nějak přenést a nebo bude nutné vše pracně nastavovat znovu?

Dobrý den, způsob přenosu dat z LM Classic do LM4 se liší podle verze vašeho operačního systému. Bohužel "automatika" funguje jen na starších Androidech, od verze 13 je nutné data přenést manuálně kvůli vnitřním restrikcím Google. Hi Mirek, you don't have to pay any subscriptions. You can use the app for free - you can record tracks, navigate, plan routes... and when you need somehing extra for a while, buy a one-time Premium or one motnh subscription and cancel it before automatic payment renewal. Your data will not be affected, it'll stay in your app.

The free version contains an ad stripe on the main screen.
ich hatte auch LM3pro gekauft um das ohne lästige Werbung zu benutzen, deswegen ist LM4free für mich keine Alternative, wobei mir die LM4 Oberfläche eh nicht gefällt, und für mein Nutzungsverhalten ist eine jährliche Gebühr nicht akzeptabel.
So heisst es also nach vielen Jahren goodbye zu sagen, ich habe mit OsmAnd (m)eine Alternative gefunden.

Hi Rafi, the app will not be "switched off". It will only stop being updated, maintained and suppported. And it will be disconnected from Locus Store and third-party online services like weather forecast ot GRapHopper.
While I was still very happy with LM classic I understand that maintaining of two different apps can't continue forever.
For any software the "lifetime" license is for the life span of the software not the life span of the developers... ;-) and I have got back a lot more value than I have payed in the far 2019.
So, thank you for your work, in the next few weeks I'll upgrade to v4.
I have only one question: I can't find on the website the prices and the details of the "premium" versions, Silver, etc... Probably they will be visible "in app" but I think it would be clearer to have a comparative table on the website (and if there is, please point me to it ;-).

J'utilise locus map pro (classic) depuis très longtemps et j'en suis très satisfait. La fonctionnalité essentielle pour moi est la possibilité d'utiliser ma clé IGN pour utiliser les cartes IGN.

I see. Unfortunately, according to the terms IGN defined for cooperation with Locus Map, the only way to use IGN maps in the app is through free access or a special product subscription. This is valid for both Locus Map Classic and Locus Map 4.

I recommend posting a comment in the Play store. Let potential Locus4 customers know how the "lifetime" license is treated. They will probably receive such a "gift" from Locus in future as well. Disabling updates means that with the next major Android update, the app will likely stop working properly for security reasons.

according to your definition of "lifetime" the publisher of an app is free to set any day of death. I could buy today a lifetime license and the publisher could kill the app tomorrow. This is ridiculous position. At the time of buying the was no communicated end of life. And the existence of locus 4 proofs it's alive.
If you have maintenance overhead just migrate the lifetime license to an equivalent plan on locus 4 (lifetime already payed).

Každý měsíc nemusíte, stačí jednou ročně. A Locus Map 5 zatím není v plánu ani ve výhledu několika let. Každopádně návrat k jednorázové platbě za doživotní licenci bohužel není možný, a to ani v Locusu Map 6 nebo 7. Bez udržitelného financování nelze aplikaci vyvíjet. Nemáme za zády miliardový byznys Seznamu ani jiné vedlejší příjmy, kterými bychom to dotovali. Máme jen naše uživatele a podporovatele. Díky za dosavadní přízeň a přejeme hodně štěstí u konkurence.

I have been using Locus Map for many, many years and I have always been baffled by the ridiculously low pricing structure for the quality of the services received.
The application is superb and the maps are soooo cheap to buy. As a developer myself, I've always wondered how the Locus team could survive with this pricing.
So please, stop your whining, and allow the team to make a living (at the new V4 price point, it's not greed, just normal business) so we can all enjoy a great app and practice our outdoors activity safely.

ABER: ich kann unter Einstellungen -> Verschiedenes -> Standardverzeichnisse den Menüpunkt "App-Daten entladen" nicht finden. Unter dem Punkt gibt es nur "Hauptverzeichnis festlegen" und "Eigene Unterverzeichnisse festlegen". Was für App-Daten muss ich überhaupt migrieren, wofür ist das nötig?

I am very sorry that the Classic version is being discontinued, which is why I bought Pro. And I also don't agree that this is a new program and that I should pay for it again. I have tried the new one several times, but it doesn't seem so customizable to me. For example, I can't put icons in the top panel as I like, only at the bottom and on the sides.

Hi Szasza, believe it or not, Locus Map 4 is a new app. And you don't have to pay for it. You can install it for free and use track recording, route planning, navigation and many other features for free. Only if you want more, support us by purchasing a one-off period if you don't like subscriptions. As for the customability - there are even more options to customize the UI in LM4. You can hide or display ALL buttons on the screen and you can also customize the main menu, not just the feature panels. All these customization features are also free, of course.

I use LM Classic with Brouter for offline routing with custom maps. I synchronise to my other devices using Syncthing which works perfectly. I absolutely don't like or need any cloud services, no community funktions or LoMaps or whatever.
So for your understanding I see that I'm not a good Locus customer, sorry for that.
So in the future I will be forced to pay 25€ per year for the Gold Service just for offline routing and offline planning (which for me is the biggest advantage to Komoot) as I can now wit LM Classic? Do you second and confirm this practice?

Hi Michael, you will not be forced to do anything. Subscribing to Premium in Locus Map 4 is a choice, not an order. Locus Map Classic with custom router, custom maps and custom elevation data will remain functioning until it is not compatible with your version of Android OS.

Hi Gabriele, you don't have to pay the subscription. Locus Map 4 is free with all the essential features. When you want to use more advanced functions, you can buy a one-off ticket - we offer one or three months and a year, without automatic renewal of payment.
Very technically, you can say that it's a new program because you've redeveloped it, because the included libraries were probably less and less compatible with the old one. And for the same reason, you don't develop the old one, it's more and more difficult to combine it.
But the program still remains the same, with the same functions, just a new engine. And just as developers usually, when a major development comes out, they increase the main version number by one (3->4), you did the same... That's why the previous users feel cheated, because they probably think the same way....
I also really like the old program, but I only use a lot of the extras because if you already have them, then why not, it's fun.
Two things come to mind that I think should be a basic function, because it's a fundamental part of hiking, to be able to read the altitude from the screen (this can also be important from a safety point of view if you get lost), and to be able to view the altitude profile of the track. Just one example: We're up on the mountain, but we need to change the route because some of us are tired. I'm planning a route to get down easier, but I can't see the elevation profile. The route might look good because it's short, but in the process, we have to climb a big mountain that I can't see. Since you're also hiking, maybe you understand...
Hi, Locus Map offers many was of "reading altitude from the screen", e.g. with the dynamic elevation (elevation on the position of the cursor), or you can add elevation to a dashboard - either as a value or in a graph of navigated route. And of course the elevation profile is a part of the route planner.
Yes, it can be displayed in the paid version, elevation profile too...
And it's such a separate program that the two programs blend well together if installed at the same time. Currently, I give the permission in Classic to automatically export to openstreetmap, but it throws back an error because it seems that the permission is given to Locus 4.

Hello. In the new version of Locus Map 4, the menu of tracks and points is not at all convenient. In Map 3 it was much more practical. In Map 4, to enter the folder of tracks or points, you need to make additional clicks. The folder icons have become small and it is unclear why there is a folder icon in the corner of the icon, which overlaps the already small user icon. Please return the appearance of this menu to the way it was in Map 3.

if you close the Library by the cross in the top left corner, it will reopen on the same place so you don't have to go through the whole folder structure. The badges on folder icons display an icon of a parent folder. We will not return to the old version of the Library because this version is what Locus users wished - a library where points and tracks can be managed together in a multi-layered structure of folders and subfolders.

- ani tyto doplňky nejsou naším produktem, Field notes byl svým autorem odstraněn z Google Play již dávno a v naktualizované podobě přežíval jen u nás v Locus Storu. Autor nereagoval na naše výzvy o aktualizaci, a proto jsme museli doplněk odstranit také z našeho Storu. Ohledně kompatibility Coord Jokera se rovněž obraťte na jeho autora, kontakt je na Google Play

Hello Peter,
what you ask, was discussed many many many times in our team and the current solution, proved by the last two years, is the best that we may do. If you like Locus Map Classic (the former Pro version), use it. It will be, as I promised, updated till March 2027 (5 years). Otherwise good alternative is Silver Premium which has almost equal functionality as Locus Classic.
Hi, we informed our users for the first time about the gradual decommissioning of LM Classic in 2019: https://www.locusmap.app/locus-map-lets-talk-future/. Then it was in 2021, https://www.locusmap.app/locus-map-3-50/, https://www.locusmap.app/locus-map-4-is-here-enjoy-its-first-release/, https://www.locusmap.app/heres-all-you-asked-us-during-the-last-two-weeks/, then from time to time on helpdesk, in Google Play listing, etc. The date Menion mentioned in 2022 was a typo - we always intended to stop supporting LMC after 5 years following LM4 launch in 2021.
Bad news. No need for Maps 4. I love Locus Maps 3 Pro. Best app ever. Works great. No need for more functions.
In the case of not working Locus Maps 3 Pro in Future I will look around which payable app will be best. Don't now if Maps 4 will it be.
For people not doing app subscriptions (like me) your offering of vouchers seems to be the "golden bridge" to reconsider. However why only 1 year. What would happen if I buy more than one of these and try to activate to get a longer period ("pre paid")? Error message?
So one would have to activate the next voucher after a year? Would they stay valid (or expire, which of course would be very bad)?
Btw. one of the main reasons I could still consider Locus an option with all of this service model hassle is the watch companion. I think you have something there that no other solution except outdooractive has something comparable at the moment (and of course Garmin in their exclusive own world). Currently using Tizen version on Galaxy Watch3, in future only Android Wear is the thing. Can you confirm this is still under development (last posts in watch forum section more than a year old)? And that the Wear version is at least as good (performance, functionality) as the Tizen version? (map and data, zoom by bezel, fast map display, configurable data fields - the more slots the better..)
