Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes the urge to get outside—whether it’s for a bike ride, a hike in the mountains, or your first weekend trip with friends. And for everyone who loves to plan together, we’re introducing several important new features in the route planner web.locusmap.app. You can now share your planned route with anyone— simply, quickly, and without restrictions. We’ve replaced the map engine for faster and smoother performance. Plus, we’ve added login method management directly in your user profile. 

More major updates to our mobile apps are just around the corner, but we didn’t manage to release them before the start of spring, so you can look forward to them throughout April.

Share your planned route with a single click

You know how it goes—you plan a great route and want to quickly send it to your friends so they can take a look and tell you what they think. Until now, that meant exporting the route and forwarding the file. Now it’s much easier.

You can now share a link to a planned route directly from the web planner, even without saving it. Just plan the route and send the link. The recipient can open it in a browser or directly in the mobile app, view the route, elevation profile, and details—all completely free, with no Premium subscription required.

Important note: The shared link transfers the route points you’ve clicked on, as well as all router settings and selected profiles—including any custom adjustments. The recipient will thus see the route exactly as you planned it, with all parameters included.

Three ways to share

You can share your route in three ways — choose the one that works best for you:

• Shortened link — generate a short URL that’s perfect for sharing in chat, email, or on social media.
• QR code — Each planned route has its own unique QR code. Just scan it with your phone, and the route will open immediately in your browser or in the app.
• Full URL from the address bar — copy the link directly from your browser.

Who can benefit from this?

Route sharing is perfect for anyone planning group trips. All it takes is for one member of the group to plan the route—the others can simply open it via a link and view it, even if they don’t have a Premium subscription. No need to send files or deal with complicated settings.

Imagine a typical situation: you’re planning a weekend hike with friends. You open web.locusmap.app, plan your route, send the link to a group chat—and in no time, everyone is looking at the same map and sorting out the details. Simple.

Smoother map performance

A lot of work has been going on behind the scenes of the web planner—we’ve replaced the entire core of the map application and switched to the MapLibre platform. What does this mean for you, the users?

• Panning and zooming on the map is now much smoother and more responsive
• The app can handle much more user-generated content on the map—up to 100,000 points or 100 routes
• In the future, the system will allow for the addition of more maps—whether our own LoMaps or maps from other providers. We are currently developing a vector map and detailed terrain shading, and you may even see a 3D view in the future.

We've also adjusted the style of the planned route so that it's more visible on the map. Now you won't confuse it with the bike paths:

Manage login methods

The second update concerns your user account. You can now add or change your login method for your Locus Map account directly in your profile settings.

Do you sign in with Google and want to add email and password sign-in as well? Or would you like to add Apple sign-in to your existing account? Now you can—and it only takes a few clicks.

What exactly can you configure?

• Add a new login method — for example, link a Google or Apple account to your existing login.
• Change the email address for the account you're logging into using the email/password method.
• Manage existing methods — all in one convenient place.

You can find the login methods settings in user profile settings — click on your profile icon in the top right corner.

You'll especially appreciate this improvement when you switch phones, switch platforms, or want to be sure you can always access your account—no matter what service you're using at the moment.

Try out the new features today

Both new features are now available at web.locusmap.app. Open the route planner, plan your first spring route, and share it with your friends—either via a link or a QR code.

As we approach the end of the year, we thought it would be a good idea to pause and look back at what we have accomplished this year together with you. And there's no shortage of things, you can judge for yourself. 

Let's start with some statistics

A look at the anonymized data you sync via the Locus cloud reveals a lot of interesting numbers for 2022:

• you’ve recorded over 2 million tracks
• you have walked, hiked, cycled, run, climbed, etc. over 11 million (!!!) kilometers with Locus Map (that's 14 times from the Earth to the Moon and back)
• most of your trips have been on foot - you have enjoyed over 71,000 walks and hikes
• the most kilometers were cycled - almost 1.5 million km
• you added almost 7 000 user photos to LoPoints on the map during the autumn alone
• geocachers went hunting for nearly 700,000 caches

We've done our best, too, and this year we've improved Locus Map with a lot of new features for you. Here are the highlights:

Satellite and aerial maps of the world

Since Locus Map is not built on Google's mapping interface, it cannot legally use Google maps. The lack of a good global satellite and aerial map was our obvious disadvantage. We had to rely on local suppliers, but we were unable to find them in all countries.

As of spring 2022, that's different - we've acquired global satellite data from HERE and Maxar, so we finally have a bird's eye view of almost the entire world in both the app and the web planner.

New winter maps and ski routing

Our offline LoMaps can be switched to a winter theme for years, but this time we've focused on their online version so we can have a winter map on the web too. We cleaned up the map, optimized it for better readability in the sun, and added updated winter LoPoints. It includes cross-country groomed and ungroomed trails (where the OSM community has put them on the map), color-coded pistes, freeride trails, ski-alpine trails, and winter hiking trails. 

We've removed one big skeleton from the closet - we've given LoMaps a brand-new and up-to-date legend.

For white trail lovers, we've added a cross-country ski routing profile for both planner and quick navigation. We're still tweaking the profile to meet the current needs of our users, so sometimes you'll find a spot where the route is not rendered - you can overcome such a section either by drawing it manually or by switching to the walking profile.

LoPoints with information from Wikipedia

LoPoints - points marking interesting and important places on the map, are an integral part of our LoMap. In the spring, we managed to link them with data from the biggest internet encyclopedia - Wikipedia. A lot of architectural, technical, and natural landmarks on the map got interesting descriptions and photos.

Your photos of interesting places on the map

During the summer we started another big project - user photos can be assigned to each LoPoint so others can see what it looks like - is the view on the map really the view in reality? Is there really water in this well? Is this ruin really worth a visit? Is it possible to hide in this shelter in bad weather? These questions can best be answered by actual photography.

A download of caches directly in the app

Until recently, only the Geocaching4Locus add-on was used to download and import caches, but we have no influence on its development - it is programmed by one of our partners. For better sustainability and flexibility, we decided to add the cache download option directly into the app. So, it doesn't yet do all the finesse of G4L, but we'll add it in time. You can now find the direct cache search and import in the geocaching tools.

Locus Map Premium - one-offs and vouchers

We were able to introduce all of these new features thanks to a new sustainable way of funding our work through subscriptions. Plus, in the spring we introduced the option to get Premium services for one-off payments - for three months or a year, with no automatic renewal. This way you can use Locus "in full" only during peak season and have it free for the rest of the year.

The newest option to get Premium without having to purchase through Google Play, are annual vouchers. These can be purchased directly on our site, for yourself, or as a gift. And it really pays off now before Christmas! Each voucher contains a unique code, after entering it in the "Go Premium" section of the menu, the app restarts in Premium mode with all the high-tech features.

And what awaits us next year?

That, in a nutshell, was our year 2022 together. And what can you look forward to next time? Well, there are plenty of things to look forward to, including:

• a completely new search - we are far from using all the possibilities of the location data available in our service, so we want to "teach" Locus better how to search in this amount
• we will most likely expand the availability of Locus... fanfare and drumroll... even for apple industry fans! Yes, we will probably start testing the first (lightweight) versions on the iOS platform as early as spring.

A year has just passed since we introduced our new project - Locus Map 4. And since we are not really into those classic anniversary parties, we want to celebrate this event with you in a somewhat unconventional way - by introducing some major new features:

• Import and satellite maps on the web
• New options for purchasing Premium features
• Locus Map Pro is now Locus Map 3 Classic

News on the web

Import routes and points

Finally, for many of you, there’s a crucial piece of functionality. It took a long time, as it was not easy for us - you are used to importing not only routes, but also points or combinations of them from the mobile app. All this also in multiple numbers. All of this is now possible in the web planner as well.

You can start the import using the button, or by simply dragging the GPX file directly onto the map (you need to be logged in for this to work):

The web application then gives you a choice of what you want to save from the imported file to the library:

Then click "Save", select the folders for routes and points separately and you're done (but you can only save with the Premium Gold package activated).

LoMap or aerial view?

We recently introduced global satellite maps to Locus Map on mobile. Now we've done the same on the web. You can now choose between cycling/touring LoMap or aerial/satellite imagery to plan your routes or view your trips.

Dynamic LoPoints are of course displayed over both. This takes the comfort of trip planning one step further again.

The maps show data from Here and Maxar and can be zoomed down to level 18.

In addition to subscriptions - the one-time payments

You all probably understand that all the gadgets and new services we have been throwing at you for a year now cost a lot of money.

Still, we know that paying for premium features as a subscription is not popular with some of you.

That's why we have prepared one-time payments for you. You pay for a specific period of time, the Premium Services are activated, the period expires, and the app returns to the basic state. No automatic payment renewal, you are in full control:

Premium for 3 months

If you're a fan of summer-only outdoor activities, this plan is for you. On this plan, you'll only pay for Premium features for the peak outdoor season of the year, when you're guaranteed the best weather and longest daylight hours. So ideal for hiking and biking.

Of course, you can use the same plan in winter, when the cross-country skiing and skialp season is in full swing. Anyway, it's up to you, you can start the 3-month Premium at any time.

Premium for 1 year

This is the plan of choice for die-hard outdoorsmen who want to be in full control of the payments for their hobby. Just pay once, you're set for a year and you don't have to deal with automatic renewal.

Try Premium for 14 days for free

So you don't buy into the hype, you can try the premium app for FREE. You have a full 14 days to do so, so if you time it right, you'll be able to make it through two weekends. The trial is included with annual Silver and Gold subscriptions. If you cancel your subscription before the end of the trial period, it won't cost you a cent.

Can I switch from a subscription to a one-time purchase and vice versa?

Yes, we have several transition scenarios, all of which have one thing in common - they are always fair to you.

For example, if you have an annual Silver subscription and want a three-month one-time Gold for the summer, your subscription will not be deactivated, but instead extended by the three months you use Gold. So you won't lose a day of the subscribed features.

Or, if you are switching from an unfinished three-month one-time Silver to an annual Gold subscription, the remaining unused funds will be used to extend the annual period pro-rata.

All options for one-off purchases, subscriptions, and transitions between them can be found directly in the app under the "Go Premium" menu.

Locus Map Pro changes to Locus Map 3 Classic

Throughout the year we’ve been explaining to our users that Locus Map 4 and Locus Map Pro are developed and maintained in two different projects. However, we are aware that the name of the older application containing the word "Pro" may evoke the opposite impression, especially for new users, that Locus Map 4 is an older or lower-end application.

That's why we decided to rename the original Locus Map Pro application to Locus Map 3 Classic.

The number 3 in the title refers to the number series of the original "Pro" application, which we are now releasing in version 3.59. The word "Classic" conveys the feeling of "good old", reliable, and time-tested software.

Some of our users are rejecting the novelty of the 4th series of the app. For example, they are used to the original user interface. Locus Map 3 Classic is primarily for them, and we will continue to maintain and update it so that it works seamlessly on the latest versions of the Android operating system.

For those who want to take advantage of our latest gadgets, there's Locus Map 4, which in Premium Silver includes the same features as Locus Map 3 Classic, plus a lot more.

long time no see, but don't worry. For a long six weeks, we worked hard for a new, highly improved version of Locus. What's new?

Track record panel & recording profiles

Do you have a problems to control track recording during ride a bike? Or were you curious about current statistics (like these you have on a small bike computer)?

New side panel allows easy track record control together with ability to define which statistics you want to see (devices with Android 4.0+).

Also system for recording profiles has changed. In a new side panel, you define which profile will be used for current recording. Number of profiles is unlimited in Locus Pro, so feel free to define all possibility you may find useful.

Dashboard improvements

One of most wanted features on our Help desk is possibility to display altitude chart directly on a map. Since this version it's possible. Dashboard system is extended for ability to display charts and also ability to define custom buttons that control track record. Screenshots say more:

We cannot forget Geocaching

Support for geocaching became one of most important features in Locus and we cannot forget it.

New version brings completely new side panel for better work with caches. Just use menu button or slide from left to display it. Side panel is mainly useful for work with multicaches, because it allows to edit new/existing waypoints together with reading listing and computing new coordinates. We are sure, you will love it!

There is also a lot of UI improvements, like support for emoticons in logs, better layout on main screen and more.

Support for sensors

Modern time comes with a lot of possible accestories. Locus now connect to more of them - new version finally allows reading Garmin CHIRF devices and also add support for BT 4.0 Speed & Cadence Bike sensors.

Other improvements

Title says 'Others', but it's probably most important part from all news. We did a lot of optimizations in the Locus and we are happy to say that: maps are faster now, Locus needs less memory and we fixed a lot of existing problems.

We wanted to release only small fix version but we‘ve changed so much features that we have to say: New version is here! Let’s summarize what’s new.

Images, Videos and Track recording

Track recording is one of the favorite features in Locus and it’s little bit improved now. You can quickly add point with images, record audio or video and everything save together as one route. It’s useful for saving interesting places on your trips or easy tool for mapping.

Web services

New version has centralized place where you can manage network services:

• ikiMap – tool for creation and sharing own maps
• Trail.pl – primarily for our polish friends for sharing hiking routes
• Výlety Zábava – it’s new service for Czech users where you can download interesting routes for trips with your family

Point screen

What do you think about new Point screen? New version improved the speed of this screen, you can hide overview map, but the important thing is more inteligent save function. We’ve completely improved it. Locus recognizes if you change anything and save changes when you press back button. On the other hand no change caused no save. It’s similar to Google’s applications and it’s quite quick way how to edit any parameters.

Geocaching focused on images

Images in Geocaching screen (listing and image tab) fits to your device resolution so reading is much more comfortable. New version is really focused on image so you’ll be able to see images together with logs of other geocachers. BUT it needs new version of Geocaching4Locus which is not released yet!

There is of course lots of improvements related with new point screen, temporary points, icons in KML file and lots more

we are really glad to announce new Locus version. It will be available on Google Play and AndroidPIT during today.

What this version brings after more then month? Let"s see

Audio/Video attachments to points

Current ability to attach photos to points is now extended. Since new version, you may directly record audio notes, take and attach video and also one more possibility - attach any generic file you want to have "close" to your point of interest.

Keep in mind, that we still work on this feature and in next version, we will introduce improved design experience.

Better support for sport activities

We are glad to add more support to sport activities. For this, new Locus version may connect to Bluetooth 4.0 Heart rate monitors. Keep in mind, that your device have to support this feature.

We also added another nice web service called EveryTrail as another possibility where you may export and share your recorded tracks.

Small improvements

Because every user has different needs, we also added huge amount of small improvements on various places

• Calibration of pitch/roll values - are you riding with 4x4 car? Then you may find useful ability to tap on pitch/roll view and calibrate it"s value.
• If you import GPX files with tracks, that has defined color, Locus now correctly use this color
• Are you importing GPX files previously exported from atoledo Garmin Basecamp? Then all point icons will looks same also after import to Locus
• Are you using Text-to-spech for navigation? You may now receive improved notifications. Text-to-speech may be now also used for POI Alert feature notifications
• Do you want to close Locus, but some running services do not quickly allow it? For this we prepared completely new "Close dialog" hidden under back button
• We also spend time on improving of drawing a maps, so you may feel difference - it"s faster now.

Fixed issues

As each program, also Locus 2.18.0 contains a problem. We hope, that most of them is solved in new version, like

• problems with charts during track record
• not working Google Places
• export to GPX files, version 1.1 (problem with compatibility with some PC programs)
• problem with export to Google Earth on your device (mainly missing icons on Google Earth map)
• incorrectly computed magnetic azimuth on compass screen

Shading, vector world map and bunch of improvements

It's been more then month since previous Locus version. I'm anyway very very glad to introduce a new version that brings many interesting features. I'm sure you'll like it. And what are the most interesting features?

Map shading (feature of Locus PRO)

The most interesting news are ability to enable shading for all Online (since Android 3.0+) and Vector maps. Shading is completely without the need of an internet and it's based on downloaded elevation files.

Currently you have to download them (HGT files) manually (or thanks to Fill altitude feature at specific place). Later, these files will be available for download in Locus Store.

Support for Personal maps is also planned, don't worry.

Speed of vector maps & world map

We're also aware of speed of vector maps. In a new version will be another improvements in vector maps speed mainly between levels 10 - 14. Hope these critical levels will be now much more usable.

Also, because levels 1 - 8 are usually very empty and mainly very slow, we prepared a small surprise. In Locus Store > Maps is now for Free download, overview map of whole world. The map has around 15 MB, so we really suggest to download it. This map will cover really whole World and will be automatically used without the need to do anything from you. Everytime you zoom out to level 8 and below, the World map will appear to give you a nice and fast overview of mother Earth.

Satellite and Compass screen

How often you search with compass and need to check what the he** is wrong with GPS? Or just need to enable GPS in Locus and also check an orientation etc? It will be very easy now.

We took both screens, and placed them into the screen with two tabs. Simple right? There is of course more improvements on both screens, but point is simple. You may work with Compass screen and also with Satellite screen at once, without need to crazy tapping ...

Automatic turn On of the screen (feature of Locus PRO)

Saving battery is our highest priority. Battery is crucial when hiking in the wild. For this purpose we prepared a new feature that allows automatically turn On screen, when you're near waypoint you guide on or during navigation when some turn come closer. This is especially useful on bike during a ride.

As a small bonus, we created ability to turn On/Off screen by two swipes gesture before top proximity sensor of your device.

Improved Text-to-speech system

Using Text-to-speech for navigation is very useful. It gives freedom to say whatever is needed and usually exists TTS Engines for every language. Problem is that they usually do not speak correctly.

Because of this, we prepared a new system that will be automatically used when you'll use TTS for navigation. The system is actually available only for English, German, Czech and Japan TTS. If you want to know more, follow this link . Same if you want to contribute another language.

Is that all?

Sure not, there is much more ...

• points that change at zoom level 12 and below to small dots are now much better visible
• switching of vector maps is now more simple (mainly for external themes)
• login over OAuth is now directly in Locus (to prevent problems on various web browsers)
• you may enable low or high contrast style on maps
• added support to choose what value will be visible above and below of guiding line
• fixed many problems like incorrect sorting of vector maps in Quick map switch, export of whole track folder, incorrect hiding points from folder after import, thanks to hard work of a few users, improved translation in whole application and much more
• and yes, one small sad news on the end. Since this version, Locus do not support Android version 2.1

After more then month (previous version was released 27.3.2013) is available a new version. Which great news bring and what you may expect? As usually, list of all main news is in welcome screen after first start. Anyway most interesting of them are

Altitude manager

- altitudes in mobile devices is disaster. It's hard fight where always win in accured measuring and used methods, anyway there is still something you may do. Locus since this version introduce complete Altitude manager that serve single purpose - improve measured altitude.

- you may define offset between measured and real altitude manually or automatically. You may use pressure sensor (if you device has it) to obtain much better values. Locus offers a few ways (also an automatic) how to calibrate the pressure sensor. You may also use offline SRTM elevation data to improve measured data and more. All this may remove huge noises and bring measure altitude closer to real values

Improved system for zoom and speed of vector maps

- when you now zoom in/out with Online or Vector maps, Locus now reuses already loaded map tiles and prepare rescaled background for next level. The result of this is much more use friendly experience during zoom like you already know from web map browsers.

- we improved existing vector maps to next level. Now, mainly on multi-core devices, maps are around 20% faster, mainly at high level. Low level are still little bit slow, but we see it from more optimistic side - there is still something to improve.

Retromap and Ukrainian translation

- We're glad to announce a new amazing maps from Russia Retromap. These maps offer huge range of scanned old historic maps, mainly from an area around Moscow. Currently Locus offers just five of these maps, but if there will be interest, owners are able to offer up to 200 various maps. We suggest to check them, just to see how amazing are old "paper" handmade maps.

- We also have to thanks to user Yaroslav Nalyvajko, who was capable to translate huge Locus (almost 9000 words) in less then three weeks. Thank you Yaroslav for excellent work

Other features

- but there is much more, like ability to define own icons for geocaching (manual), so we hope, you'll create and  share some nice icon pack

- track charts are now less noisy and you may also display gradient of your track

- you may also add vertical speed, slope or current or last GPS time into your dashboards

- we also improved coordinate transformations and added support for Israel, Czech and New Zealand projections

- and these was just news. There is a lot of small changes, many many fixes and more.
