The summer is in full swing and we are publishing a brand new version of your most favourite app. Again, it contains tens of fixes and small improvements, but also a few major enhancements we developed according to your ideas:

More accurate trip planning with new estimated time box

When you plan a trip, a workout route or a bike ride, you usually tell Locus a few facts - what activity you are going to do on the route and what particular places you need to visit. Locus measures the length of the planned route, shows its elevation chart and calculated elevation gain so you can imagine what your trip will look like. Now, it can show your how long it will take!

The estimated time box you can find in the bottom bar of the Route planner:

The time is calculated by a new algorithm delivered by our routing partners GraphHopper and BRouter, interpolated with your average speed of selected activity.

New clear and simple Live Tracking manager

We are going on improving our real time location sharing service - Live Tracking. As we had hinted last time, we've been preparing a brand new screen of Live Tracking manager:

Now you can:

• clearly distinguish among your defined Live Tracking profiles
• simply start and stop them
• see how many active people are in selected rooms
• quickly enter livetracking chat in selected rooms

Simple Locus Store log in without contacts permission

Many of you have wondered why on Earth Locus needs contacts permission. Locus doesn't need to know your contacts - it just needed your Google or Facebook account e-mail for Locus Store identification. Nevertheless, Android has this permission in a bulk with contacts so we spent hours explaining that it is not our fault.

Hurray, Locus doesn't need to know your email any longer, nor does it need the "contacts permission".

Login to Locus Store is now processed directly by Google or Facebook:

Locus Store 2.0!

Select your map quickly according to your location

One of the most common reasons we need a map is we want to know where to go in the area we are at the moment. Therefore, the first thing you see when you open Locus Store either from the Locus menu or from the map manager is map of your neighborhood:

Find the best map for your vacation

If you need a map of a place you want to visit on your vacation, you've got several options how to find it:

1) you can browse the Store in regions and in map providers

2) you can find your vacation place on an overview map and select appropriate map product

3) you can fultext search for your map

4) you can filter the map you need according to the activity on your vacation

Looking for some tips for trips?

Locus Store doesn't contain just maps. You can find also routes of interesting trips and journeys or points of interest there. You can try bike pilgrimage along the Via Francigena or a few nice trips in the Czech republic. Or display the whole database of UNESCO protected sites.

To be honest, so far, the Routes and Points categories are not overloaded yet but we're working on adding more content into them. If you know about some interesting route source you would like to see in Locus Store, let us know!

Need additional features or graphics?

Premium Live tracking for sharing your real time position with groups of your friends or family, custom app graphics like navigation and map cursors, map themes, packages of point icons... all these can be found in Locus Store too. Check categories Graphics and Features.

And remember, everywhere you have the same searching and browsing options as in the Maps section.

Cloud backup of your maps

When you download new maps from Locus Store, it's  time to back them up! From now on you can save them in your personal cloud storage at Dropbox or Google Drive. Similarly as you can do with your tracks, points and settings. We strongly recommend to do it especially with quality paid maps of our map partners, e.g. Swisstopo, Kompass or NeoTreks.

Record your indoor workouts!

More and more of you use Locus for your workouts and training. Especially now in winter a lot of runners visit indoor training centers and need to record their activity there. Therefore, we enabled to switch your Locus GPS into an "indoor mode":

Wanna hear your current elevation on your mountain trek?

Audio coach has become a very useful companion for your running workouts but also for hikes in the mountains. A lot of you, hiking and mountaineering Locusers, wish to be informed regularly about your actual elevation or altitude without need to look on your phone display. So current altitude has been added among the Audio coach parameters:

Maps of Alpine Association of Slovenia (PZS - Planinska zveza Slovenije) in the map scale 1 : 25.000 are one of the most useful navigation tools for visitors of Slovenian mountains. Marked trails, mountain huts, paths, natural and cultural points of interest, tourist infrastructure and everything else important for activities in the nature are represented here in detail. Field data are continuously updated by volunteers of Slovenian alpine clubs. Alpine Association of Slovenia unites 287 of them, counting over 55 000 members.

PZS maps can be obtained in 16 offline packages offered in Locus Store. Maps cover northern part of the country and more will be coming in near future: Bohinj East and West, Jalovec in Mangart North and South, Kamniško Savinjske Alpe (Steiner Alpen), Karavanke East and West, Krnsko pogorje East and West, Stol East and West, Triglav East&West, Triglav National Park East&West. 

As has been mentioned, maps of Slovenian mountains are available in Locus Store in "Europe > Slovenia > PZS Slovenia" folder:

Installation is standard as in case of other offline-package form of maps of our partners, e.g. Ordnance Survey or Swisstopo - purchase in Locus Store, download into the "Offline" tab of your Map manager:

Your purchased map can be downloaded from Locus Store freely for one year. Then we recommend creating a backup of your map somewhere out of your mobile or tablet - on your PC or Dropbox, for instance. Update of the map from Locus Store is a subject of another purchase! Your map can be used on any device running Locus with your Locus Store account.

Recently, besides never ending improving of features and fine-tuning of Locus UX, we've been focusing on enlarging the portfolio of maps. Let's remind - in a few recent months we added terrific trail maps of the USA by NeoTreks, satellite images by USGS, Great Britain maps by Ordnance Survey, European maps by Kompass, Polish hiking maps by Compass or very detailed maps of Belgium by IGN. The map offer, therefore, grew significantly and besides the Locus Store where you can view and purchase these maps we haven't presented the maps much. It's about time to change it - we're introducing a new web page with  Locus premium maps.

Premium maps for free

When you call something "premium" it usually means that the thing is pricy and has some extra value high above the standard. We took a slightly different point of view at this term and among the maps we'd like to present we included also the basic maps of the OpenStreetMap project that we offer for FREE both for online viewing and downloading for offline use. OSM maps have come through a great development over its short history, they are growing in detail and are very accurate. Locus Map has offered them since its very beginning, they are still widely used and we don't see a single reason why not to include them in premium maps too.

FREE are also first three packages of vector Lomaps, that we generate from OSM data. LoMaps are the only maps fully optimized exclusively for Locus Map application - their content can be changed according to the user's activity and they contain offline addresses and a vast database of points of interest.

Old friends

Besides the news mentioned at start, the web page, of course, presents also already introduced map makers. Maps of the German Outdooractive, Austrian Freytag-Berndt, Czech SHOCart, French IGN or Swisstopo can be found in Locus for quite a while.

Each map producer or provider is presented by a large graphic depicting the map on a mobile and tablet screen, and an article informing about coverage, available scales and content of the map. All maps can be obtained in our Locus Store that is an inseparable part of Locus application.
